nc12s15a _0 2012 007 10 thermal consi d era t i o n therm a l ma nagem ent is an importa nt part of the system d e si g n . to en sure prop er, reli a b le ope ration , sufficie n t co o ling of the po wer mod u le i s ne ede d ov er the entire temperature range of the module. conve c tion cooling is u s u a lly the dominant mode o f heat tran sfer. hen c e, the choice of e q u i pment to ch ara c teri ze th e thermal p e rfo r man c e of th e power mo dule is a win d tunnel. thermal t esting setup delta? s dc/dc po we r mo dule s are ch ara c teri ze d in heated ve rtical win d tunne ls that sim u la te the therm a l environ ment s encou ntered in most electroni cs equipm ent. this type of equipm ent commonly uses vertically mo unted ci rcuit ca rd s in ca binet ra ck s in whi c h the po wer m odul es are mo unted. the followi ng figure shows the wind tunnel cha r a c teri zati on setup. th e powe r mod u le is mount ed on a test pwb and is vertically po sitioned within the wind tu nnel. the spa c e b e twee n the n e ighb orin g pwb and the top of the po we r modul e is consta ntly kep t at 6.35mm (0.2 5??). thermal derating heat can b e removed by in crea sing a i rflow ove r th e module. to enhan ce system relia bi lity, the power module sho u ld alway s be operat ed belo w the maximum op erating te mp eratu r e. if the tempe r ature exceeds the maximum module temperature, reli ability of the unit may be affected.
